Driving north along California route #101 through Mendocino, Humboldt
and Del Norte Counties, one reaches the fantastic old growth Redwood
Groves of Sequoia Sempervirens. These are the world famous groves
of "Palo Rojo" as the first exploring Spanairds called them after spotting
them through spyglasses in 1526. For many years, these unique silvan
attractions, known collectively as the "Drive Through Redwoods",
were popular tourist spots on the old Redwood Highway. The following
photos were taken during the last century when a precious few were saved
for posterity in private parks. The Chandelier Tree, stands in Leggett,
CA and the Shrine Tree is still open in season at Myers Flat, CA. The
Coolidge tree stood near the Chandelier Tree but was cut down in 1938,
prompting the tunneling of the Chandelier. The Drive Thru Stump
was located in Pepperwood and was blown up with DYNAMITE !@^@!
after WW2. The train thru tunnel was at Confusion Hill when I
arrived in Humboldt county in 1976, but shortly thereafter new owners
cut them down as a SAFETY HAZARD!
Jarl Deboer has a very large collection of these
fantastic trees on line here
