Driving
north along California route #101 through Mendocino, Humboldt and
Del Norte Counties, one reaches the fantastic old growth Redwood groves
of the coastal species Sequoia Sempervirens. These groves and
their visitors also attracted various business entrepeneurs.
Motor hotels or "motels" followed the original camps with tents and
cabins that prevailed through the WW2 era. Shops selling redwood
knicknacks were popular tourist spots on the old Redwood Highway.
Unfortunately the only business still in healthy (?) operation is
the Maxxam Corp owned Pacific Lumber Mill #1 at Scotia, NorCali.
