Popocatepetl Volcano The Smoking Mountain spews smoke, hot rocks & ash on Tuesday, December 19 2000  See an excellent story Here.

The volcano (5452 mts) that towers over Mexico City shot red-hot rocks into the air on Tuesday December 19, 2000 more than 800 years since its last catastrophic eruption, the volcano is again showing signs of eruption activity and has forced the evacuation of people in villages closeby.  The volcano, which awoke from a 70-year slumber in 1994, had a spectacular eruption Monday night that frightened even residents who had disregarded authorities' pleas to leave the area. "Don Goyito" as the local residents call Popocatepetl has awoken.
