Please
enjoy this digital photography tour of the 2002 Aztec Dance Celebration
at IXCATEOPAN, Guerrero, Mexico. This is the resting place
of the remains of Cuauhtémoc,
the last Aztec emperor, murdered by Hernan Cortés. On February
28, 1525, during an expedition to Honduras Cortés ordered Cuauhtémoc
to be put to death by hanging. According to legend his "restos" were
returned to his birthplace, the village of Ixcateopan, in the hills
of Guerrero state. Each year in late February a festival in his honor
is held featuring Aztec dancers from around Mexico. The church is
unique in that there are no Christ or Virgin images, only those of
Cuauhtémoc grace the walls. The town is noted for its' marble
street paving and fine hillside vistas.
